How we make the Reeds
It all starts with a tube of Arundo Donax cane from France, aged for at least 3 years.
The tube is split and we select the best piece/s to use. The guillotine cuts the piece to length and then pre-gouged to keep the blade of our gouger nice and sharp for longer! We then gouge the cane using a machine to the desired thickness.
The Cane is then placed carefully on the shaping machine and shaped using our desired template.
The Shaped piece of cane is then thinned at the ends using an easel. We then make a wire loop and place it over the cane. This cane is then placed on a staple, measured for length and bound with thread to secure it. It is now a blank reed.
The blank reed is profiled, finished by hand and cut to it's final length.
